Consumers often struggle with the trial and error process of finding skincare solutions that work for their unique and changing needs. Conflicting advice, marketing noise, and lack of personalization create frustration and fatigue.
Problem
Goals
Design an adaptive system that responds to users' changing skin conditions, environments, and habits
Build trust through transparency in AI recommendations and access to expert insights
Foster community engagement by enabling users to share experiences and advice in a peer-driven space
Offer a scalable freemium model that balances broad accessibility with tiered access to expert support
Bridge science, technology, and user behavior to make skincare more intuitive, reliable, and empowering
Research
To inform the product strategy and design direction, a multi-method research approach was conducted to better understand user behavior, market gaps, and the emotional landscape surrounding skincare decision-making. The research aimed to uncover how users navigate product selection, what builds trust, and where current solutions fall short.
Competitive research revealed that many existing skincare platforms offer limited personalization, static assessments, and minimal community engagement. Research also drew on the Baumann Skin Type system to inform how users define their skin needs.

Design Process
The design process was anchored in creating a responsive, user centered journey that could scale from onboarding to personalized recommendations and community engagement. This journey map and MVP outline helped structure the core features around user needs, feasibility, and future growth
Drawing on the Baumann Skin Type system, this step assesses skin characteristics alongside user demographics, geographic location, and current product usage. This foundational data enables the AI to begin tailoring recommendations with greater precision.

Outcome
The final product is a freemium mobile app that acts as a dynamic skincare companion. Users receive evolving, AI-powered recommendations, access to a real peer community, and premium tiers, consultation from board-certified dermatologists. The platform bridges gaps between science, product, and experience, offering a skincare journey that grows with the user.
This project highlighted the importance of designing for trust in AI driven experiences, especially in wellness. Balancing personalized tech with human insight was key. In the next phase, Iād explore integration with wearable sensors or third-party skincare data for even deeper personalization.
